On Literacy Levels, Loving Lifelines and Lightweight Luxuries

Hey Reader,

We need the Olympics so bad. In spite of some of the madness, overall, the good feel out of it have been so heartening. Simone Biles has reminded everyone that she’s THAT GIRL, historically. And Celine Dion opening the ceremonies by singing? We do not deserve her!

Anywho, lemme jump into what I’m thinking about this week.

RANT

Get your reading comprehension up.

The one thing people do on these internets, is misunderstand things that are being said. As a collective, our reading comprehension game has taken a nosedive. And this election season, I WANT EVERYONE TO GET THEIR READING COMPREHENSION GAME UP. 📚🧠

Because folks be on these internets acting like critical thinking is endangered. It's like some people see a headline and their brain just shuts down, refusing to process any nuance or context. Y'all, we cannot afford this level of willful ignorance, especially not now. 🙅🏾‍♀️

Let's do better in these next 3 months because y'all not gon stress us out by being willfully obtuse. You not! We've got too much at stake to be playing games with misinformation and half-baked interpretations.

I'm begging y'all – read the whole article, not just the headline. Check the sources. Use that beautiful brain of yours to think critically about what you're consuming. Don't just swallow and regurgitate whatever's fed to you on social media.

And for the love of all that is holy, please learn to spot fake news. It's running rampant, and we need everyone on high alert. Your likes, shares, and comments have power. Use that power responsibly. 💪🏾

We've got three months to get our collective act together. Let's raise the bar on our media literacy and critical thinking skills. The future of our democracy might just depend on it. No pressure or anything. 😅

REFLECTION

We need safe spaces and safe people to heal.

I’ve been thinking about how so many of us are in healing season, after burnout. We’re trying to prioritize ourselves in a way we haven’t before. And one thing I want us to recognize is that we cannot heal in silos.

Healing is collective work as much as it is individual. A person will have a hard time healing if the community they're in doesn't support that, or re-traumatizes them in real time.

It's why being on a healing journey as someone who is Black in America, is an uphill climb. 😩 We're trying to heal our nervous systems, and we sit with joy. Then we hear about Sonya Massey being killed in her own home by cops. It's so unjust.

We need soul care, and that is often in community. Self-care, without community care isn't as useful. And that is why we need to look for safe people, if we can’t find safe spaces. PEOPLE are what make a place safe, and if a place feels tough for you, find one person who feels safe.

Safe spaces and safe people give us room to breathe, to be vulnerable, to make mistakes, and to grow. They're the fertile soil where our healing can take root and flourish. Without them, we're constantly in survival mode, never getting the chance to truly thrive.

So, I challenge you this week: Seek out your safe spaces and your safe people. Nurture those relationships. And if you can, be that safe space for someone else. Because healing might start with the individual, but it is indeed a community project that ripples out. 🌊

RECOMMENDATION

Beat the heat with a personal air cooler.

I LOVEEE summertime and it is my favorite time. So when it gets so hot that even I’m sweating, you know the temperature has done the most. I’ve been in 95 degree temperature all week and there have been times where I felt like I was melting.

For my folks going through perimenopause, I know you over there overheating on a regular basis even when you aren’t in the sun.

So lemme introduce you to the Evapolar Evalight portable cooler. It is a game-changer cuz it's like having your own personal oasis in this concrete jungle heat. 🌴❄️

This little device is compact, portable, and packs a serious cooling punch. It uses evaporative cooling technology to lower the temperature around you, and it's eco-friendly to boot. Plus, it doubles as a humidifier and air purifier. Talk about multitasking! 🙌🏾

It's energy-efficient and doesn't use any harmful refrigerants. It's perfect for your home office, bedroom, or anywhere you need a little extra chill. And let's be real, we could all use some extra chill these days. 😎

So if you're feeling the heat like we are, do yourself a favor and check out the Evapolar Evalight. Your sweaty self will thank you.

Before you go, I'd love to hear from you - who is your safe person? The one you can turn to when the world feels too heavy? Hit reply and let me know. Because sometimes, just naming that person can remind us of the support we have.

Stay cool, stay informed, and stay healing, friends. ❤️‍🩹
