A Sunday reflection: a letter to my younger self

Hey Reader,

Sundays are my sabbath. I started honoring that a few months ago at the behest of my friend and big sis Fawn Weaver, who don’t play about her days of rest. On Sundays, I do NOTHING but what I want to do. I am not useful to anyone but myself on those days. Husband, niece, family, anyone. Sundays are my days of respite from being a responsible human being. I might spend the entire day in my pajamas, playing the Sims, ignoring the phone, guilt free. ♥️

And that has been a game-changer. In fact, I wrote this email and scheduled it to go out 2 days ago, so I could be free to frolic as I wish on my actual sabbath. It has become my favorite day of every week. And when I can’t do it on a Sunday in a particular week (like if I’m traveling), I reschedule my sabbath for another day that week.

I NEED THAT DAY OF CHILL to recalibrate and reset. 🙏🏾

My 5th book is out in the world this week and I’m heading to New York for school visits and press. It’s going to be a TIME and I can’t wait!

I’ve been reflecting on why this book has been so meaningful to me. My children’s books are what they are intentionally, and they’ve also become my favorite teachers themselves, as I’m using them to re-parent myself. I use them to heal certain wounds I didn’t even know I had.

Throughout the process of writing Little Troublemaker Defends Her Name and sharing it with the world, I've had to reconnect with my own inner child… revisiting those playground moments and first day of school moments when my name felt like a burden rather than the blessing it truly is.

The process has been healing.

✍🏾 A Letter to My Younger Self

As a spiritual exercise, I even sat down and wrote a letter to my younger self.

Dropping it for you here in case Little Reader needs to read this, too. 🫶🏾

Dear Little Luvvie,
Girl, I wish I could wrap my arms around you right now. I am SO PROUD of you. The way you navigate a world that constantly tries to dim your light is nothing short of magical. ✨
That name of yours, Ifeoluwa, carry it with pride, baby. It means “God’s Love” and it’s a prophecy for your life. It's not "too hard" like they say; it's your crown, your legacy, your power. Your name is steeped in rich culture and the prayers of your ancestors.
And it’s BEAUTIFUL. It is. ♥️
I know how much it hurts when teachers butcher it or friends give up trying, but trust me when I say: Your name is WORTH defending. Your culture is WORTH celebrating. Your roots are not something to minimize; they're your superpower.
And that urge you feel to speak up? That fire in your chest when something isn’t right? Hold onto that. That’s your courage talking. That’s your calling showing up early.

You're not “too loud.” You are not "too opinionated.” You are not "too much" of anything. You are EXACTLY enough.
In fact, you are everything this world needs more of. Your voice, your pride, your fire; they’re going to change lives. They’re going to change your life.
I won't lie and say it gets easier overnight, but I promise you this: one day you'll look back and realize that everything that made you feel like an outsider is actually what makes you extraordinary.
Your boldness isn’t a burden. It’s a blessing. You will use that fire to make the best kind of GOOD TROUBLE in the world. I’ll tell you more about that when you’re older but it’s going to go beyond your wildest dreams.

Little Luvvie, I see you, baby. I honor you. You are so loved.

And yes, I'm writing books for you and all the other children who need to know they are powerful, precious and deserve to be celebrated exactly as they are. Yes, I said writing books. Wild, right?
Always your champion & protector,
Big Luvvie

So yeah, 2 days from launch, I’m resting and sitting with this letter. I know Little Luvvie is proud. And I’m honored to be able to live a life that would make her go “OMG THAT IS SO COOL!!!”

And now, I wanna have the kiddies in your life meet Little Luvvie, through the books I’ve written about and for her.
