To the ones who don’t aspire to be humble

Hey Reader,

So… we need to talk about this RAGGEDY narrative that women need to be humble, because I’m tired of it.

Actually, it’s not just a narrative, but an obsession that people have to ensure that girls and women are “humble” as if the day we were born, that was the assignment. When it never was.

When Vice President MY PRESIDENT, Kamala Harris, went on the Call Her Daddy podcast and said “there are a whole lot of women not aspiring to be humble” I felt that in my SOUL.

Because YES, Madame President. Say THAT.

In a world run by mediocre (actually, subpar) white men, why would you want US to be humble? When we have had to be EXCEPTIONAL to excel. We’ve had to be twice as good (four times, if you’re a Black woman) to get anywhere. Why would we need to be humble?? For who? For what?

I write for the girls and women who have never aspired to be humble. 😤😤😤We know that the ones who benefit from our humility are the same ones who have built systems that thrive on our DOUBT.

My humility will never be tied to me questioning my work, or my worth. I am humble because I know I am GOD-made and VILLAGE-made (never self-made. Shoutout to my girl LaKeysha Hallmon). But never will my humility be tied to the diminishing of myself or how dope I am.

God really put all this creativity into making us brilliant and bold and beautiful… and humble is supposed to be our goal? Nah.

And that’s what I want for our girls. It’s what I want for US now, as grown women.

I wrote PROFESSIONAL TROUBLEMAKER to remind us that we don’t need to spend so much time letting fear keep us shrinking. We do not have time for that. We literally cannot afford to continue to humble ourselves into bent backs.

And when it was time to write my LITTLE TROUBLEMAKER children’s book series, I wanted them to center around a character, specifically a little Black girl, who would NEVER be humbled. She’s dark skinned, with a fade. And really, really cute. And really smart. And really confident. And she will always be that way. In every book I write about Little Luvvie, I guarantee that.

MY GIRL WILL NEVER BE HUMBLED. And even when she makes a mistake (which she always will), she doesn’t walk away thinking “I am a mistake.” She thinks: “I MADE A MISTAKE AND NOW I KNOW BETTER. SO, I'M BETTER FOR IT.”

And I love that for her (and for us).

Audacious confidence. Boldness. Taking up space. Owning who we were created to be.

THAT IS THE GOAL. 💫

So that’s why I put EVERYTHING behind Little Luvvie. She represents the inner child who got the permission earlier to be ALL OF THIS. And I want your little ones to meet her. 🥹🫶🏾
